The Vikings are coming! The Cornish arm of The Vikings, the oldest re-enactment society in the country, are visiting the Gunnislake Festival this year, to reproduce a Viking village and to demonstrate the battle order which would have been used at the Battle of Hingston Down, in 838 A.D. For decades the Cornish Dumnonia resisted the growing pressure from the Saxons of Wessex. In 838 they joined with a Viking force and faced the Saxon army on the lower slopes of Hingston Down, near Gunnislake. Their defeat at the hands of the Saxons brought end to Cornish independence.
